Man Dies After Car Becomes Submerged At Nassau County Marina

A man died after he drove through the fence outside a Long Island marina and landed in the water, police announced.

In Nassau County, police detectives said that a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling through the parking lot of the Theodore Roosevelt Marina shortly after 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, when the driver lost control.

Police said that the Jetta struck a fence and became submerged in the water, trapping the driver inside.

Bay constables and responding police officers were able to remove the 85-year-old man from the water and he was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than two hours after the crash at approximately 4:45 p.m. by a hospital physician.

The man's identity has not yet been released.

It is unclear what caused the incident.
